A few people have emailed wondering why I've included the cinema clip in my top 3 favourite Simpsons moments. I need to explain: THX is a sound reproduction system for cinemas, developed by George Lucas' company Lucasfilm in 1983. Accompanying the logo is a piece of music called "Deep Note", a distinctive synthesized crescendo sound. There is an ongoing joke about the volume and sheer force of Deep Note during the THX trailer, hence the Simpsons parody. I also like how Deep Note sounds, and anyone who has listened to it at full volume in the cinema will appreciate its impact.
