A German couple had a beautiful baby boy. Although the little boy seemed healthy in every way, clearly had perfect hearing and understood whatever was said to him, he did not speak and the couple began to accept that the child was mute.
One day, when the son was eight, the mother was serving supper and the son said, in perfect German, "This sauerkraut is not to your usual standard."
The parents were amazed that the child could speak.
"Why have you never spoken before?" the asked.
"Up until now everything has been most satisfactory."
